The URD MAF/Timing Calibrator sometimes referred to as the FTC, is a very popular end-user tunable calibration unit for Toyotas. This unit is ideal for vehicles that are converted to forced induction. It is a key component of our Supercharger Performance Upgrade Kits. The MAF/Timing Calibrator has two main functions. It is the fuel calibrator that modifies the signal from the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, and it also calibrates ignition timing.
MAF calibration is used to remap the fuel curve to optimize fuel mixture for all driving conditions from normal driving to high boost. This gives you the ability to get your forced induction system operating like a factory-installed unit.
One key feature of the URD MAF/Timing Calibrator is that it has an internal high precision MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor like much more expensive stand-alone systems. The MAP sensor is used for the load scale indicator for the internal map tables. On a forced-induction engine using a MAP sensor is very important. The reason for this is that you can have very different manifold pressures at the same throttle. This is a big advantage over units that just tie into the throttle position sensor. A MAP sensor makes the unit more expensive to produce. Isn’t your Toyota worth it?
The most critical challenge in converting your engine to forced induction is increasing the fuel delivery to match the extra air being stuffed into the engine by your supercharger or turbo. The URD MAF/Timing Calibrator will allow you to install larger than stock injectors, and it will allow you to retune the ECU to properly control them. This approach works well and is generally limited to injector size increases to a maximum of roughly twice as large as the stock injectors. The Timing Calibrator allows timing retard to suppress boost induced spark knock. This can prevent serious and often catastrophic engine damage from lack of sufficient timing control.
The MAF/Timing Calibrator uses two map tables, one for fuel calibration and one for timing calibration. The tables are truly three-dimensional and each map table and have 61 load columns up to 16 PSI and 16 RPM rows for a total of 986 map table cells, all of which are directly accessible. Each cell has 200 levels of adjustment. There is nothing else out there that is this easy to tune with this level of map resolution.
The MAF/Timing Calibrator is fully tunable by using the easy to use R4 tuning software that is included and your Windows PC. You will need a serial port or serial port converter on your PC to connect to the MAF/Timing Calibrator. To properly tune it you should use a wideband display unit and a scan tool. The tuning device has our new closed-loop boost enrichment function built into the unit. This function manipulates the signal from the forward O2 sensor in boost to cause the ECU to richen up the fuel mixture while still in closed-loop mode. It works on engines with the old style O2 sensors and the newer ones with the new style air/fuel ratio sensors. This is a breakthrough technology and URD was the first to bring it to you!!
